Frequently Asked Questions
Am I required to make reservations?
We do not take reservations. All vehicles are served on a first-come, first-served basis. The Oxford Bellevue Ferry travels across the Tred Avon River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore many times a day. If you just miss the ferry we are usually back within 20 minutes or so. The ferry can actually make more trips by shuttling than having a set time to leave each side. The only times that are set are the first trip each day and the last trips. We begin service each day in Oxford at 9 AM. The time of the last trip changes with the sunset time. The times are posted at the landings or you may call 410-745-9023. The ferry returns to the Oxford dock and is closed before sunset.
Am I responsible for driving my own vehicle onto and off of the ferry?
Each customer transporting a motor vehicle is required to have a driver available to operate the vehicle at all times while it is on the ferry. It is your responsibility to operate your vehicle whenever it is moved under its own power, including driving it on and off the vessel. The Oxford Bellevue Ferry company is not responsible in any way for the operation of the customer’s motor vehicle. you may call 410-745-9023. The ferry returns to the Oxford dock and is closed before sunset.
Where do I pay?
The fare is collected on the ferry. Cash or check is the preferred payment. We recently added VENMO as an option. We cannot process credit or debit cards as Wi-Fi is unreliable on the ferry and card readers are not waterproof. There are ATM’s located in Oxford and St Michaels.
Do you accept debit or credit cards or other forms of payment?
We cannot process credit or debit cards as Wi-Fi is unreliable on the ferry and remote card readers are not waterproof. We accept Cash, check or now VENMO. Ask the crew for the QR code for Venmo. There are ATM’s located in Oxford and St Michaels.
Do round trip tickets need to be used on the same day?
Yes, all roundtrips need to be used on day of purchase.
May I bring pets with me on the ferry?
Dogs and cats are welcome on board our ferry. Your pets are carried free of charge, but they must be accompanied by a passenger who is responsible for their care and conduct during the passage. Owners are required to clean up after their pets. All pets must be kept on a leash or in a container, and must be under the control of the passenger at all times. Please be courteous to others who may not be comfortable around your pet!
Is there parking near the ferry?
Parking is available free of charge at both landings. There are some signs in Bellevue which indicate that you must have a permit to park, but those signs are for boat trailers not for ferry customer vehicles.
Is the ferry ADA Compliant?
Yes, we welcome everyone aboard. The Oxford Bellevue Ferry ramps have diamond plate areas to aid in accessibility and the deck is level.
Are there any restrooms on the ferry?
No, restrooms are located at each landing.
What is the order for boarding the ferry?
Motorized vehicles are the driven on the ferry and parked before bicycles and passengers. Please follow the direction of the captain and crew! The particular placement of your vehicle is important in order to maximize the deck space.
Are there any special precautions I should take while riding on the ferry?
The Oxford Bellevue Ferry is one of the safest and most seaworthy vessels certified by U.S. Coast Guard crews. However, as with any vessel, you should always conduct yourself with care while aboard and pay attention to any children traveling with you. In particular, when a ferry is approaching or docking at a terminal, position yourself as safely as possible so that you are not thrown off balance when the ferry reaches the dock. Please remember, passengers are NOT allowed to stand on the red line or lean on the gates at either end of the vessel at any time!
Can I smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, marijuana or cigars on the ferry?
US Coast Guard regulations and Maryland law prohibit you from smoking anywhere on the ferry vessel. All smoking materials (including but not limited to matches, cigars, cigarettes, e-cigarettes and pipes) must be extinguished prior to boarding.
Do you charge extra for trailers?
Yes. We charge an additional fare for any trailer towed by a vehicle. The rate is based on length and size.
Are there any special discounts available?
Yes, we sell a discounted 10 trip ticket for one-way passage for car, driver and one passenger, available for purchase on the ferry. The ticket is valid for one year from the date of purchase. This ticket is assigned to purchaser and cannot be shared with others. Current cost is $110 ($170 value). Additional passengers are $2 each.
Special Boarding Procedures
at Bellevue Landing
Vehicles please wait in line at the first stop sign where it says, “Ferry Line Starts Here” until you are directed to approach the ferry by the captain or crew. The pier is only one lane so please do not drive out to the end until all vehicles arriving have exited.
If you are on foot or a bicycle, proceed to the end of the pier and you will see a call sign. Pull down on the metal loop securing it over the cleat to raise the yellow call sign. The captain and crew can see it from Oxford. They will be over for you shortly after loading in Oxford.
NOTE: Parking in Bellevue is free of charge for ferry customers. However, cars should not park in the long spaces reserved for boat trailers. There is a boat launching ramp near the ferry landing. Please use caution when walking in the parking lot. Parking permit signs refer to boat trailers not ferry customer vehicles.
